Soft enamel fills color into the recessed areas of the die-struck metal, leaving the raised metal outlines higher than the enamel. You can feel the texture when you run your finger across the coin. Hard enamel (also called cloisonne) fills the enamel flush with the metal surface, then polishes everything smooth. The result is a flat, jewel-quality finish with a premium, sleek feel. How Enamel Colors Are Applied to Custom Coins
